The first foundation
Even before Café Domino existed, Karl began investing in land and property. Purchasing his first plot laid the foundations, although no one could have imagined at the time what would eventually grow from it.

Our story
What now connects six places in the heart of Campo Tures began with an idea, plenty of courage and the joy of being a host.

One family. Many chapters.
The story begins long before Café Domino opened: with Karl’s childhood at the Pfarrwirt inn, his training as a pastry chef and his commitment to developing the Speikboden ski area.
1942–1957 · The roots
In 1942, Karl Pörnbacher is born at the Pfarrwirt inn in Campo Tures. Hospitality and village life are part of his story from the very beginning.
In 1957, he moves to Bolzano and begins his apprenticeship at Pasticceria Bacher. After completing his training, he earns his master pastry chef qualification and becomes a member of the pastry chefs’ examination board.

1971–1973 · Pioneering years at Speikboden
In 1971, Karl is one of the founding members of Speikboden AG. One year later, he establishes the Speikboden Ski School. The first lift begins operating in 1973 – an important step for winter tourism in the Tauferer Ahrntal valley.

In 1972, Karl purchases the old Leineggerhaus in the centre of Campo Tures. Following extensive renovations, master pastry chef Karl Pörnbacher and his wife Alberta open Café Domino together on 23 December 1973.
Karl contributes his skills as a master pastry chef. With her warm manner, Alberta becomes the heart and soul of the house, giving the café its special atmosphere and charm.
The small café soon becomes a popular meeting place in the heart of the village – and the beginning of our story.

From 1968 to today

Even before Café Domino existed, Karl began investing in land and property. Purchasing his first plot laid the foundations, although no one could have imagined at the time what would eventually grow from it.
Karl purchases the old Leineggerhaus in the centre of Campo Tures. The building needs renovation, but its location and possibilities convince him.
Following extensive renovations, Karl and his wife Alberta open Café Domino together on 23 December 1973. Karl contributes his expertise as a master pastry chef, while Alberta’s warm personality makes her the heart and soul of the house. The small café soon becomes a popular meeting place in the heart of the village – and the beginning of our story.
Karl and Alberta marry. From then on, they develop Domino and their other projects together. Karl keeps pursuing new ideas, while Alberta shapes the atmosphere of the house with her warmth and charm.
Purchasing the neighbouring Pfendhaus opens up new possibilities. Parts of the building are initially used as apartments; later, another chapter in the family’s hospitality story begins here.
Karl purchases the former Hotel Central in a prime location in the village centre. The building needs renovation, but once again he recognises the potential of the site. The family runs the property themselves for the first few years, before leasing it out temporarily.
The old Central is demolished and completely rebuilt. The former hotel becomes a modern apartment house. With the apartments opening, accommodation joins the café and restaurant as an important part of the family business.
A large unfinished space in the Central is still waiting for a purpose. The children are older now and show an interest in the family business, so the family takes the next step. Restaurant Pizzeria Rosmarin is created. Planned and fitted out with plenty of personal initiative, it proves successful from the very beginning.
The après-ski venue “Hühnerstall” opens in the former Pfendhaus beside Domino. Initially permitted to open on only a few days, it quickly becomes a popular meeting place after skiing.
Following further renovations, the venue receives a permanent licence and continues under the name “Go-In”. Kurt takes over its management and assumes increasing responsibility within the family business.
The old Pfendhaus is demolished and rebuilt. At the same time, Café Domino is comprehensively renovated and extended. Karl’s pastry kitchen also gains larger new premises in the basement – the very craft with which Domino’s story began.
Apparthotel Central is extended once again. The apartments are enlarged and the building is gradually adapted to meet new requirements.
Domino is extended once more. The roof is removed and an additional floor is created. More than four decades after opening, the very building where everything began continues to evolve.
One of the biggest decisions in the family’s history: Karl, Carmen and Kurt purchase Hotel Alpinum together. The property is comprehensively renovated and integrated as a new part of the family businesses that have grown over the years.
On 15 June 2019, the Alpinum reopens its doors following its redesign. For the first time, a hotel complements the existing apartments, restaurant and café – all just a few steps from the other properties.
The pandemic brings a situation that had previously seemed unimaginable. Alpinum, Central and Domino are forced to close their doors temporarily. After decades of growth, everything suddenly comes to a halt. Yet this period passes too – and the story continues.
Further investment is made in comfort and quality at Hotel Alpinum. A new reception is created, the lift is renewed and a new relaxation room with a fireplace provides a place to unwind. Step by step, the hotel continues to evolve – always with guests’ wishes in mind.
